The Brief

Spotify Jam already allows people to listen together live and contribute to a shared queue. This concept explores the next layer: turning those temporary sessions into persistent, discoverable spaces people can return to.

Jam is the live session. Rooms is where the people, queues and chaos stay.

Deliverables: Product positioning, website landing-page copy, UX microcopy and an App Store release note.

What Is Spotify Rooms?

Listening became hanging out again!

Spotify Rooms gives live listening sessions somewhere to live.

Create a private Room for your friends or discover public Rooms built around artists, genres, activities and extremely specific emotional situations.

Whether it's late-night spirals, pre-drinks, study sessions, long-distance friendships or a group fight over who keeps adding Drake, Rooms turns passive listening into a shared experience.

 

How Spotify Rooms Works

Create. Invite. Listen. Argue over the queue.

Step 1: Create a Room

Start a space for your friends, fandom or current emotional condition.

Choose whether your Room is public, private or invite-only.

Warning: giving everyone queue access may permanently reveal who has bad taste.

Step 2: Invite Your People

Send the Room link through WhatsApp, Instagram, Discord - literally anywhere.

Friends can join the Room, see when a live Jam begins and return for future sessions without needing a new invite every time.

Riya joined the Room and immediately skipped the song you were emotionally attached to.

Step 3: Build the Queue Together

Start a Jam inside the Room and let members add songs, react live, vote on tracks or reorder the queue.

Hosts can control permissions whenever democracy stops working.

The Live Room Experience

More than just listening.

Inside a live Room, members can react to songs, see who added what, vote on tracks, pin favourites and share moments instantly. Because half the fun of music is sending: "WAIT FOR THE CHORUS."

FAQs

Can everyone control the queue?

Room hosts decide who can add, skip, reorder or vote on songs. Power can be shared. Whether it should be is another question.

Does everyone need Spotify Premium?

Creating and joining a Room is available to Spotify users. Starting or joining its live Jam follows Spotify's existing subscription and device requirements.

Will Room listening affect my recommendations or Wrapped?

Members can choose whether a Room session contributes to their Taste Profile. What happens during pre-drinks does not automatically need to follow you into Discover Weekly.

Can I join a Room from another country?

Yes. Rooms are designed for people listening together from different places. Long-distance friendship already requires enough effort.

Can I join silently?

Yes. Join, listen and vibe quietly without adding songs immediately. Lurking, but musically.

What happens when the host leaves?

The Room remains. The host can pass control of the live Jam to another member before leaving. The aux must always have an heir.
